OG #SWAGFAM & GLAMFAM were founded on October 21, 2009 as two separate families.
The two families combined as one when Mariz ended up getting both an Ate (Jessica - GLAM) & a Kuya (Michael - SWAG) on October 12, 2011.
BAMFam became our official name in May 2014, founded by Ava Albano and Anne David.
"When I was PASA's Secretary during hardCORE's term, one of my goals was to make sure a Kapatid Program of some sort was brought back to life. I wanted to give PASA students an opportunity to mentor and be mentored, inside and outside of PASA, by someone they could eventually call a brother or sister. My hope was to have each Kapatid pair build long-lasting relationships and have that piece of home away from home as a part of their college experience at CSUEB. As the years have past since the very first revealing in 2009, I've seen my little family grow into what it is today and I wouldn't trade them for anything. They each have such beautiful hearts and have played such an imperative role in PASA and in each other's lives. As their Ate, I've witnessed their interactions amongst each other and they are a true testament of that piece of home away from home. Sometimes, I feel like I'm their mom (or Lola...-_-) because I love to brag about them like they're my own children and it brings me so much to see how much they've accomplished together. But I'll save the bragging for another time. ;)
I think the most beautiful thing about the Kapatid program is that, despite which fam you represent, we all represent our big fam, our main fam, PASA. Throughout the years of the program's existence, PASA has cultivated the culture of addressing everyone as Ate/Kuya/Ading, regardless of the sub-fam you're in, because of the love and respect they have for each other. It's so crazy to see how much the program and BAMFam has flourished over the years and I couldn't be any prouder of what it has become and the impact it's had on everyone. “I joined the Kapatid program for multiple reasons: to have an older brother/sister/mentor throughout college and to develop new bonds and friendships with a network of people. Coming into college, I really didn’t have any family who lived in the East Bay Area. All of my relatives are from different parts of the world. & although I do have two older brothers, they are so much older than I am so there’s always been a generation gap between us. I wanted the Kapatid program to fill in that void in my life. I wanted a family away from home.
As for developing a network full of people, I knew that going to school in Hayward would get me out of my comfort zone. I grew up in the same city my entire life so I knew that I had to meet new people and make new friends since none of my childhood friends chose to go to East Bay with me.
I was lucky enough to get matched up with not one, but TWO older Kapatids; my Kuya Michael V. & Ate Jessica G. Luckily, Kuya Michael and Ate Jessica have been best friends way before college so it wasn’t awkward for them to share me as their Ading. They treated me as one of their own little sisters, looked after me, and watched me grow throughout my college years. I feel so incredibly blessed to be matched with them in the Kapatid program because they are my ultimate role models in life. In fact, every single member in BAMFam possesses some type of leadership and ambition in them and it inspires me so much to become a better person in my everyday life. It feels good to know a group of people who set high goals in their lives because it makes you want to strive for success as well. The Kapatid program was definitely the gateway towards meeting my lifelong friends.”
